Information Communication and Technology (ICT) revealed an information about internet awareness in Pakistan based on a survey. Which states that around 69% of Pakistani don’t know what the internet really is aged between 15 to 65 years.
This survey was conducted based on 2000 households in Pakistan, in Sirilanka by LIRNEasia who carries research on ICT. According to LIRNEAsia the targeted sample for this survey was people between the age of 15 and 65 at the national level. This survey was conducted in 2017 between the months of October and December which helps in understanding how users use or don’t use ICT services.
The CEO of LirneAsia Helani Galpaya stated in the report that,
The 152 million active cellular subscribers mentioned on Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) website, despite a good SIM registration system, tell nothing about the subscribers – whether they are men and women, rich or poor and does not really help understand access and usage gaps
This research clearly points out that how much of the people in Asian countries especially are unaware of the internet. In Pakistan, only 30% people know about the internet(This was asked to them if they use the internet without explaining what this really is) out of which 17% told that they have used it. And those who haven’t used that before told that the main reason behind that was lack of awareness about the internet.
About 43% of women likely to use the internet than men. This is smaller than internet gap in India which is 57% and in Bangladesh,it is 62%. The survey has found that About 49% of people who used internet said that the core limiting factor on their use of the internet is lack of time or relevance to use it. 22% told that there was no limitation on their usage of the internet. 18% said that the internet data is costly to them.
Further Helani Galpaya said that
The rest of the 53pc have no internet capability on their phones. It is time to get smartphones into the hands of the people and basic phones out.
Helani Galpaya said at the launch time that smartphones were not relevant to many and about 25% could not afford it. The survey report especially enlightens on the low users of smartphones (22%) and with (25%) who have featured phone supporting internet facility.
The survey of internet awareness in Pakistan report states that. In Pakistan about 57% users between the age of 15 to 65 have the mobile phone of some kind which is better than peer countries in Asia.
PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) did not concentrate much on this survey conducted last year. As this is opposite to the claims of PTA of high telephone density in Pakistan. PTA says that this survey by a private organization is providing opposite information to the telephone density in the country.
